2. I have a Rinnai gas storage water heater.  What should I do?
To check if your water heater is affected, visit our dedicated website at gasstoragecheck.rinnai.com.au and follow the prompts or call us on 1300 364 559.  We prefer you contact us using the website as this will enable us to implement the free in-home check as quickly and effectively as possible.

If your gas storage water heater is affected, Rinnai will then arrange for an authorised service technician to provide a free in-home check.

  • If the water heater is operating normally there is no internal gas leak and it can continue to be safely used until an authorised technician completes the free in-home check.

  • If the water heater stops operating before an authorised technician completes the free in-home check, consumers must not attempt to relight the burner.
3. What could happen if the unit fails / how dangerous is the situation / is my family at risk?
Rinnai identified that a possible assembly error on appliances in the affected batch may result in an internal gas connection not being adequately secured.  This may cause a small internal gas leak during operation which will stop the water operating and leave it in a safe condition.

However, any subsequent attempts by consumers at re-lighting the burner in accordance with the instructions may result in a flame flash extending beyond the boundary of the access door which presents a risk of injury.

  • If the water heater is operating normally there is no internal gas leak and it can continue to be safely used until an authorised technician completes the free in-home check.

  • If the water heater stops operating before an authorised technician completes the free in-home check, consumers must not attempt to relight the burner.
4. Has there been any injury, property damage (fires) or loss of life?
There have been no reports of injury, property damage or loss of life.
5. Can I continue to operate my gas storage water heater?
  • If the water heater is operating normally there is no internal gas leak and it can continue to be safely used until an authorised technician completes the free in-home check.

  • If the water heater stops operating before an authorised technician completes the free in-home check, consumers must not attempt to relight the burner.
6. What does the check involve?
It involves a free in-home check by an authorised technician who will confirm the security of the affected gas connection and remediate as needed.  The technician will also check for any signs of appliance damage and repair as necessary, check ignition and ensure correct operation.
7. How long will it take to complete the check?
In most cases, the check will take less than 15 minutes.
8. How long will I have to wait before a technician can visit to do the check?
Rinnai will call on our extensive network of authorised service technicians which will enable us to respond in the shortest possible time frame.

We are unable to provide a firm time frame at this stage but are committed to completing the free in-home check as soon as possible and will inform you of a firm date as soon as we can.
9. Do I have to be home for the check?
The Rinnai gas storage water heater is an outdoor appliance.  Therefore you do not have to be home if the authorised service technician can safely reach your water heater without entering your home.  Any pets such as dogs should be restrained or kept indoors during the time of the visit.  If these conditions are unable to be met it will be necessary for an adult to be present, we apologise for this inconvenience.
10. How did this happen?
Our investigations have confirmed a possible error during assembly of a small number of gas storage water heaters.
